Engineering Mechanics

About the Subject:

Engineering mechanics is the application of mechanics to solve problems involving common engineering elements. The goal of this Engineering Mechanics course is to expose students to problems in mechanics as applied to plausibly real-world scenarios. Problems of particular types are explored in detail in the hopes that students will gain an inductive understanding of the underlying principles at work; students should then be able to recognize problems of this sort in real-world situations and respond accordingly.

Topics to be covered in this Seminar:

Basics and statics of particles– Lami‟s theorem, Parallelogram and triangular Law of forces – rectangular components – Equilibrium of a particle–Equivalent systems of forces – Principle of transmissibility . Equilibrium of Rigid bodies– Moments and Couples – Varignon‟s theorem – Single equivalent force -Equilibrium of Rigid bodies in two dimensions – Equilibrium of Rigid bodies in three dimensions  Properties of surface and solids-Centroids and centre of mass- Area moments of inertia of plane areas – Parallel axis theorem and perpendicular axis theorem –Principal moments of inertia of plane areas – Principal axes of inertia-Mass moment of inertia. Dynamics of particles– Relative motion – Curvilinear motion - Newton‟s laws of motion – Work Energy Equation– Impulse and Momentum.Friction and elements of rigid body dynamics-. Rolling resistance -Translation and Rotation of Rigid Bodies.
